Late Saturday night and early Sunday morning, near Gainesville, Florida, a series of crashes occurred on Interstate 75 and US Highway 441. The crashes were caused by poor visibility due to severe fog and smoke coming from a nearby brush fire. Several cars and tractor-trailers were involved in the crashes, resulting in major damages. Many of the cars were smashed and burned and some were stuck under trucks.
Steven Camps, who witnessed the crashes, described the scene as “horrendous” and “mass chaos.” The authorities have stated that ten people have been killed and at least eighteen are left injured after the deadly crashes. The victims were taken to Shands Hospital at the University of Florida and another local hospital for treatment and observations. Many victims were treated and released while some still remain at the hospital for further observations.
